Nutritional screening - creating a unique screening tool that is completely automated by Alastair Forbes (MSc in Clinical Nutrition)
Alastair Forbes is the programme director and visiting professor of medicine at the University of Tartu. He has an international reputation in specialist clinical nutrition. He has led nutrition teams in the UK and contributes substantially to the educational programme of the European nutrition society ESPEN, of which he has now been made an honorary life member. His research interests span the whole range of clinical nutrition, and he has a strong track record in citations and in helping his graduate students to achieve good degrees and high-quality publications.

A third of people admitted to hospital have malnutrition or are at risk of developing it. This has major adverse effects on outcomes, including mortality. Some progress has been made, but there is still an urgent need for more clinically aware staff to act on what is known and to research what is not. The master's programme in Clinical Nutrition is the only English language programme in the EU to address nutrition from this clinical perspective and to incorporate patient-focused attachments throughout. Our students complete an interactive taught programme and their own research project, and it is expected that all will present papers at international meetings during their time with us.

The prospects for our graduates have rarely been better as hospitals, universities, governments, and industry realise the importance of tackling malnutrition in our populations.
Tartu is a great city in which to live and study – student-orientated but with theatres, museums and cultural events aplenty, as well as a rich offering of bars and restaurants. It is no accident that Tartu will be the European City of Culture in 2024.
