Always the beginner – jumping around topics in materials science but still moving forward by Liga Britala (MSc in Materials Science and Technology)
Liga graduated from the University of Tartu in 2021, where she researched metasurfaces for application in gas sensors. Afterwards, she moved back to Latvia to pursue a different topic in materials science. She is currently a doctoral student at Riga Technical University and working in lithium-ion battery research at the Institute of Solid-State Physics in Riga, Latvia.

Liga’s curiosity and uncertainty have made her jump around four different topics in her academic career, switching from organics to nanotechnology in BSc to metasurfaces in MSc, to lithium-ion battery research in doctoral studies, always making her the beginner in her field. However, the unconventional experience she has gained through it all is irreplaceable and has helped her move forward with her degree despite always being the new girl.

For Liga studying at the University of Tartu was an opportunity to establish a skillset for adapting to new environments. The challenges and opportunities offered at UT expanded her understanding of what higher education could look like and provided a possibility to explore a vast array of new topics in her field of interest.
