From humanities towards digital humanities: my experience at the Department of English Studies by Denys Savchenko (MA in European Languages and Cultures)

Denys Savchenko is a doctoral student from Ukraine studying at the Institute of Foreign Language and Cultures. His primary focus is corpus linguistics, learner language and digital methods in humanities.

In this talk, Denys will share his experience of transitioning to digital methods for humanities research. This involves using programming languages in order to analyse big datasets of spoken language and using statistical methods to draw conclusions regarding similarities and differences between Estonian learners of English and the speakers of British English. He knew too little about digital humanities prior to starting his MA at the University of Tartu, and the programme allowed him to gain invaluable skills in doing research through the “digital way”.

The European Languages and Cultures master's programme is an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge about the English language and culture. On top of that, it is a perfect place to get first-hand experience in using contemporary digital methods in humanities research.
