International innovation: experiences in assisting startup growth in Brazil and Estonia by Isabela Vilhalba (MA in Information Technology Law)
Isabela Vilhalba is a Brazilian attorney specialising in agreements, IP, digital law, and data protection. She currently coordinates these practices at Chicarino, Quaresma, and Tanaka Advogados, a law firm based in São Paulo, Brasil. She holds an MA in Information Technology Law from the University of Tartu (Estonia) and a Postgraduate in Intellectual Property and New Businesses from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (Brazil).

When working with startups and companies implementing innovative business models, there will inevitably come a moment when businesses must expand to new markets to keep growing and improving. As a Brazilian lawyer helping foreign companies enter the Brazilian market and Brazilian founders and startups continue their journey in Estonia, she experiences first-hand the challenges of this process and how the UT Information Technology Law master's programme can assist professionals in developing the necessary skills. During her talk, she will show examples of how her education prepared her for such challenges and opened new professional doors.

The University of Tartu's IT Law master's programme is more than just a legal master's programme. It presents you with legal subjects and technical topics such as programming and information security to ensure graduates have a more practical understanding of what they are working on, resulting in more well-rounded professionals. You get to apply your knowledge in actual cases, connect with specialists as fellow students and lecturers, and see first-hand how Estonia became a startup hub and a front-runner in e-government and society digitisation.
